Engaged? Shopping for Bridal Fabrics and Trims in the Garment District

Vogue Pattern 1163

Judging by the number of emails I've received lately asking where to shop for bridal fabrics, the holidays still remain a prime time for couples to get engaged. My standard answer to this question is Mood, B&J, Lace Star and Sposabella, plus M&J Trimming's bridal department, but I have to confess I haven't actively looked for or thought about bridal fabrics and trims in a long time. So readers, help me out here: Have you shopped for bridal fabrics or trims in NYC recently? If so, where do you recommend brides-to-be head first? If you have any photos of your bridal gown or bridesmaids gowns that were made from fabric purchased in the Garment District, email them to me and I may post them here. Thanks!

  1. I've never shopped for bridal anything in the District...but I'd try my hometown Vogue Fabrics before anything else? Do people do anything else besides get engaged by the fire at Christmas time? Man, these folks need to get a life. :)

  2. I'm in the middle of this, so I'll chime in! My friend just finished her wedding gown made with all-garment district purchased materials (I helped her out with a bit of the sewing & general cheering along (; ), pictures I took of it are over here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/wck/sets/72157625183484824/

If I remember correctly, most of her materials were from Lace Star.

Anyway, I've been looking at silks at Mood, Lace Star (have a ton of swatches from here), Metro, and Paron's.

I'm making a navy blue duchesse satin evening coat out of satin from Parons & a 1960s pattern, and the silk for my dress is likely coming from Mood or Lace Star. My flowergirls & bridesmaid are wearing dresses I'm making with silk from Parons.

For trim, I've been to Daytona, Joyce Trimming, and MJ.

Silk organza for underlining - I've actually bought a lot of online, as Dharma Trading company has great prices on plain white silk organza. :)

  3. Thanks Meg. I still have the muslin to do, but I'll be shopping in the district when the time comes. At least we've picked a pattern.

  4. I am looking for a stretch ivory tulle or netting fabric to use to make a bodice for an existing halter styled dress where the bride wants her arms covered. I want it soft but not crinkled and in solid, no embellishments. Can you advise?

    1. Yes! Your answer is Spandex House;. Upstairs, third floor (in number of staircases to get there). The stretch netting is up there, and they have plenty of it!
