Guide Fabrics at 262 W. 38th Street is a great source for linings and interlinings. |
On my way to getting some buttonholes made at Jonathan Embroidery, I stopped in at Guide Fabrics in the Garment District recently. If you're looking for linings, interlinings or muslin, this store is an excellent wholesale and retail source. They have a huge assortment of all kinds of linings in all colors--bemberg, silks, acetates, twills, organzas, cottons, quilted linings and more. Interlinings include Thinsulate, hymo, batting, fusible and non-fusible tricots; specialty fabrics Guide stocks include twill pocketing, bonded leather, canvas, etc. Their retail prices are very reasonable, and the more you buy the more you can negotiate the price. The sales staff is helpful and will bring out color cards to get you that perfect match. (Tip: Go in with a friend or two and divvy up a bolt of muslin; you could end up getting the firmer grade of muslin for just $1.50 to $2.00 a yard, depending on the type of muslin.)
GIVEAWAY ALERT!
To celebrate Guide Fabrics' fifty years of business in the Garment District, owner Thomas Loverdi gave Shop the Garment District three yards of muslin to give away to one lucky reader. Readers, this is the good stuff, in a weight perfect to muslin-up a jacket, coat or structured dress. To enter this giveaway, all you need to do is 1) become a Google Follower of this web site, and 2) leave a comment on this post by Jan. 9, 2011, 12 pm EST indicating you'd like to be entered. One winner will be chosen at random; the winner will be announced here next week. Good luck, and congratulations to Guide Fabrics on celebrating fifty years of business!
I am a follower and I would love to win this fabric. Thanks for the offering!
ReplyDeleteSign me up! I can always use some good muslin, I've only got the cheapo stuff left, so I keep avoiding it...
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see what good muslin is like. Please sign me up.
ReplyDeleteFollowing, please add me to the muslin giveaway. Thx.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the giveaway. I just started using muslin in the past 2 years - it has made a tremendous difference in my finished product, so I would like to be entered.
ReplyDeleteI had a chance last year to get two yards of some good muslin. It was perfect for draft fitting jeans. I'm drape designing for the first time and could use some good muslin.
ReplyDeleteThis follower sure does wish she lived in NY, if only for the shopping!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to take a chance for the muslin. sign me up
ReplyDeletePlease sign me up for the give away. I'll find a way to rationalize new fabric despite my resolution to sew from stash as much as possible. I use cheap muslin all the time. I'd love to see what good muslin is like.
ReplyDeleteSign me up of course. I'd love to compare it to the bolt I buy at Joann's. Plus I can always use muslin!
ReplyDeleteBTW are you going to make a list of all the stores you cover? or have you and I am missing it?
I'm in! Good to find a new (to me) source!
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower. I'm so jealous of all the wonderful fabric options that are available in NYC!
ReplyDeleteCarried your recommendations w/ me to Gar. Dist. in July. The best. Would love to win some excellent quality muslin.
ReplyDeletethanks for the detailed info on what is sold at Guide. I am using lots of muslin lately and it sure would be nice to have a whole bolt of it, especially at those prices. That's only a little more than I paid in Korea.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great giveaway! I love reading your posts and I am now officially a follower.
ReplyDeleteSign me up! I'm not sure I've ever seen the "good stuff", let alone worked with it. Seattle is a sewing wasteland.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway. I'm a follower, and I would like to be entered in the contest.
ReplyDeleteI have "21 Century Fabrics" on my list at that address. Do you know if "Guide Fabrics" is a new name for that store, or are there two fabric stores at that address?
ReplyDeleteI'll let the others have the chance at the muslin...I just wondered about that address & store name.
High quality muslin--I'd love to experience it.
ReplyDeletethank you for the opportunity!

I'm already a follower, but I bet due to international shipping costs being high (I live in London, UK) I'd not be in the running as a winner - however as the saying goes "Nothing ventured, nothing gained" :)!
ReplyDeleteQuiltB, no, it's not a new name for the store and I think they've been at that address for awhile. Not familiar with 21 Century Fabrics...
ReplyDelete50 years of business is a long time; they must be good. I'd love to be entered in the giveaway.
ReplyDelete50 Years, I was 10 when they started. I would like to be entered in the giveaway.
ReplyDeleteWahoo... how fun!! I would love to be part of the giveaway. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower and I'd love to see what good quality muslin looks like. Winning this would give me that opportunity!
ReplyDeleteOn your Lindsay T Sews blog, in 2008 or 2009, I followed a link & printed a spreadsheet of someone's store listings. Top of the list is "21 Century Fabrics" at 262 W. 38th St., ground floor. If you go to Google Maps & use Street View, you can see that storefront & make out the sign that says "21st Century Fabrics." Hard to tell through the scaffolding in that picture if there's another separate store to the left of 21st Century. There's an open door and rolls of fabric, but I can't see another store name sign, or tell if that's one big store with two doors, or two separate stores. There's a photo crop there & reflections.
ReplyDeleteYou can Google "21 Century Fabrics" and come up with a store at that address. It's after business hours in NYC or I'd call & check. I'd never heard of Guide Fabrics until this post. From your picture, it looks like a ground floor store at that address. In fact, I think I can see the front of the building across the street where Spandex House is at #263.
So the mystery of Guide & 21/21st Century being at the same address will have to wait til tomorrow to be further investigated with some calls.
Addresses are one of the things I find confusing about shopping in the Garment District. Unless you remember to look up, see a sign somewhere, or know exactly what level the store is, you don't always come across it while walking the sidewalks. Sometimes it's hard to tell where one little store ends & another begins, or if an address on a doorway will lead you right into a fabric store or into the lobby of an office building with a fabric store somewhere upstairs. I realize that's part of the GD's charm, but I've missed entire stores because I "blinked" as I walked past, or I didn't see a sign in an upper story window. There's also the issue of whether places are retail or wholesale or both, and if that's clearly marked outside. I've gone into places I didn't mean to that way...oops!
I've never worked with good quality muslin but I sure would like the opportunity!
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see what the good stuff looks like! And I'm a follower!
ReplyDeleteI am a follower and am sooooooo appreciative of your great info. Because of you my daughter-in-law and I are planning a trip to the garment district (we live in Florida so this is a big deal for us). We would not have done this had it not been for you and you great guidance. I would love to have the muslin. I did not know there were different grades. Sounds interesting. Again my sincere thanks for what you do for those of us on the outside looking in.

I love to shop in the garment district but don't get to do it often. The last time I was there was two years ago when I purchased the fabric for my daughter's wedding gown, my gown, and flower girl dresses. I would appreciate good muslin since my project in the near future is to make a coat for myself. Gita
