What to Watch: HBO's "Triangle: Remembering the Fire"

Clear your schedules: Tomorrow (3/21) HBO Documentary Films presents TRIANGLE: REMEMBERING THE FIRE exclusively on HBO at 9:00 p.m ET/8:00C. The premiere marks the 100th anniversary of the Triangle Shirt Waist Factory Fire that began the modern labor movement. I'm putting aside my usual evening sewing so I can give this documentary my full attention...how about you?

  1. I don't have HBO. Maybe I'll try to rent it sometime. Reading about this event made a deep impact on me as a child and I've already seen one documentary this year.

The tragedy of it is undeniable. There will be discussion of how this event was the impetus for greater acceptance of unions in the United States, thereby protecting millions of American workers in the future.

While discussing what is a very pertinent topic I hope the film doesn't romanticize history: Unions excluded blacks for decades. For all I know, the reason no blacks died in the fire is because they couldn't work there in the first place.

  2. I will watch (if not tomorrow night, then On Demand). HBO did an amazing documentary with Schmatta, so I'm eager to see another on the garment industry.

  3. Kathleen Fasanella's post on the anniversary was interesting.

    "100 Years of Shame."

I enjoyed "Schmatta," although as a New Yorker born and raised I've always seen that word spelled "schmatte." I guess they figured people with no knowledge of German or Yiddish wouldn't know how to pronounce it.

  4. I wish I had HBO to watch this. Maybe I can aquire it elsewhere?? My son did a project on this fire in 8th grade in preparation for an overnight trip from tiny Deerfield, NH, to the Big Apple. I developed a morbid fascination with this tragedy. So sad.
