Reader Tip: Best Place for Silk Organza

from Emory via email:

"I just wanted to suggest adding maybe one comment/fact to your review on Chic Fabrics. They are probably the best source for silk organza in the garment district—$7/yard, always. I'm sure other places occasionally have sales or whatever and you might be able to find silk organza for less, but Chic Fabrics has a good color selection and a consistent low price. Kenneth King recommended that I get my silk organza there when I took an online class with him - that's how I found it!"

Thanks for the tip. Duly noted.

I suggested some ideas for future Garment District surveys. Obviously, if there's a cheaper online source for something standard, like muslin, pattern paper or oak tag, please mention it.

Unlike some people, I'm wary of online fabric shopping. I once ordered something from Fabrics.com. It was inexpensive, so the purchase was low-risk, but the colors looked different than they had on my monitor, the texture was coarser than expected, and the yardage came packaged in a plastic bag and was slightly moist.

I don't believe that the fact something is priced at $1 a yard means it's a bargain. Especially if I can't touch it.

Another suggestion:

Where to buy leather. Mood's collection looks good and I've seen some other recommendations, but I know nothing about skins.

BTW, $7 a yard for silk organza sounds good. I've usually paid around $10 for new organza at places like Paron and New York Elegant Fabrics, both of which are good stores.

Meg
Thanks for starting this blog! First thing I hit in the morning (well after FB!). The only hazard for you is that I now consider you my personal garment district shopper! Here is the first, of what will likely be many, questions/requests!

Do you know of any good shops for linen shopping? I am most interested right now in looking at some stretch linen (sort of an oxymoron) to see how it handles and drapes. I remember seeing a "linen-only" shop on 36th or 37th a couple of years ago. Any insight?
Thanks so much
Laura

I'm going to be in twice this week and you can bet this will be on my visit at least once this week.

Help! I'm trying to find silk lycra printed fabric. I purchased a DVF blouse and to my horror it had a metal zipper in the back that wasn't flattering and incredibly cold. I had to return it but then I decided I'd make my own blouse, but I'm having a really hard time finding silk lycra in prints ,any suggestions? Thanks :O)
